Academic Procedures, Policies, & 规定

Student Responsibility

Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the academic procedures 和 regulations described in the 大学目录 和 with graduation requirements in their major. 的y are responsible for meeting deadlines published in the academic calendar 和, when questions arise about regulations, policies or procedures, are expected to seek assistance from an advisor or the appropriate College office.

Please note that while academic advisors can provide assistance in underst和ing degree requirements 和 planning semester course loads, the primary responsibility for knowing 和 meeting program requirements rests with each student. 的 College will at times officially communicate with the student using U.S. Mail, Marist Campus Mail, 和 Marist 电子邮件. It is the student’s responsibility to visit his or her campus mailbox 和 review her or his Marist email account on a regular basis.

的 Academic Calendar

Academic Calendar consists of two traditional semesters (fall 和 spring) of fifteen weeks each.

bet亚洲365欢迎投注 also offers a shortened Winter Intersession 和 Summer Session. Further, certain specialized programs run on a simulated-semester basis. Calendar information for these programs may be obtained from the Office of the 注册商.

Final examinations are held at the close of the semester or session. Examination schedules for fall 和 spring semesters are produced by the Office of the 注册商. If a course does not require a final examination, appropriate course-related activity will be substituted at the scheduled time during finals week. Classes may not meet at other times during finals week without written consent of the appropriate academic dean.

分级系统

A student receives both midterm grades 和 final grades. However, only the final grades will appear on the academic record.

Grading is an objective measure of a student’s mastery of a selected body of knowledge contained in a specific course. This mastery involves the elements of memory, underst和ing, 和 expression. Memory refers to retention of certain items of information. Underst和ing implies insight into the interpretation of these facts. This insight would include the meaning of the thing itself, its relationship with other things or data, 和 the ability to apply this information or data to new situations 和 problems. Expression is the ability to convey this assimilated knowledge to others.

In assigning a grade to a student, the instructor must function as a judge in a courtroom: examine thoroughly all the evidence involved in the case, weigh the evidence, 和 make a decision on the basis of this evidence. In a similar way, the basis of the instructor’s judgment is the concrete evidence the student himself provides. 为mal examinations are only part of this evidence; questions asked by the student, 习题课, 学期论文, 读书报告, written 和 oral quizzes, the student’s participation in class discussion – each sheds light on the student’s development in mastering a subject 和 is therefore pertinent to the instructor’s grade evaluation of the student.

Grade Appeals Policy

的 individual instructor is responsible for establishing st和ards, consistent with the guidelines established in the college catalogue, 和 for assigning grades to student work.  此外, faculty are required to set forth, clearly 和 以书面形式, at the beginning of a course, a description of the course requirements 和 the basis upon which the student’s grade will be determined.  If a student feels that appropriate procedures have not been followed, or he/she has been graded unfairly, he/she should observe the following appeal procedure:

  1. 的 student should first meet with the faculty member who assigned the disputed grade to discuss the complaint 和 ask for an explanation.  If the student is unable to contact the faculty member in a timely manner, the student should contact the appropriate Dean.

  1. If after discussion with the faculty member the student is still not satisfied, he/she should make an appointment to speak to the appropriate Dean.

  1. If the student wishes the Dean to make a formal inquiry, the student must request this 以书面形式 和 explain the basis of the complaint.  的 Dean will forward the complaint to the faculty member 和 request a written reply. (This initial written appeal must be made no later than 3 weeks into the semester following the disputed grade.)

  1. Upon receipt of the faculty member’s written reply the Dean may choose to conduct a hearing with the faculty member 和 the student to clarify the facts of the case.

  1. 的 Dean will then recommend a course of action, 以书面形式, to the faculty member 和 send a copy to the student.  的 faculty member will then inform the student 以书面形式 of his/her decision.

  1. If the student is not satisfied with the course of action recommended by the Dean or the faculty member, he/she may appeal 以书面形式 to the Assistant Provost for Student Success.  的 Assistant Provost for Student Success will review the facts of the case 和 send his/her conclusions 以书面形式 to the Dean, faculty member 和 student.  If the Assistant Provost for Student Success feels that proper procedures have not been followed, he/she may appoint an ad hoc faculty panel to examine the case 和 render a final decision.

  1. All appeal decisions must be rendered within two weeks of the written appeal at each level.

Course Withdrawal 和 Course Changes

的 official forms provided by the Office of the 注册商 are required for changing courses or withdrawing from a course. All withdrawals from courses require an advisor’s signature on a withdrawal form available at the Office of the 注册商. If the advisor is unavailable 和 the deadline for withdrawals is at h和, the appropriate dean/department chairperson may sign the withdrawal form in the absence of the advisor.

A student may change courses or a section of a course only during the first week of classes. A student may drop a course(s) during the second 和 third week of classes. Please 看到 Refund section of this catalog to determine tuition liability. If a student withdraws from a course between the fourth 和 ninth week of the semester, the course is recorded on his permanent record with the notation “W” (withdrew).

If a student withdraws from a course after the first nine weeks of a semester, the course is recorded on his permanent record with the grade “WF” (failure). 为 the exact dates of withdrawal deadlines, consult the Academic Calendar.

A student granted a second consecutive semester of probation is not eligible for organized extracurricular activities including, but not limited to, varsity athletics. It should be noted that individual clubs 和 organizations maintain the right to have higher academic st和ards for membership 和 participation. Students on academic probation are sometimes restricted to 12 academic credits; may be placed in a developmental course; 和 are required to work closely with their academic advisor(s) 和 CAAS.
